Interesting Lady: Tattoo Lady

Maud Stevens Wagner (1877-1961) was a contortionist and aerialist working for the circus when she met her future husband at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. What started with a date, continued with tattoo artist Gus teaching Maud the “hand-poked” tattoo technique. Together they traveled the U.S. as tattooed attractions and working as tattoo artists at fairs and vaudeville houses. Their only daughter Lotteva also became a tattoo artist.
