Interesting little fact: Alphonse Bertillon was a French police clerk who applied the technique of anthropometry to law enforcement creating an identification system based on physical measurements. He is also the inventor of the mugshot. Taking photographs of criminals began only a few years after the invention of photography. But it was not until 1888 that Bertillon standardized the process by devising the iconic form of placing a side photo with a head on shot on one sheet.
